Nokia’s buds look like AirPods, but how do they compare? At $150, they are $100 cheaper than Apple’s AirPods Pro, yet still offer active noise cancelation (ANC). You get five hours of battery with ANC on (the same as AirPods Pro), a charging case, and Google Assistant (but no Siri). Unsurprisingly, there are compromises to accommodate all that.
Audio quality is a mixed bag. The buds have a bias towards bass, and vocals that are normally crisp and clear get a little lost when using Nokia's earphones. It's far from the worst audio reproduction we've ever heard, but it's nothing more than decent. There's also no ear detection, so audio won’t pause when you remove the buds.
More problematic are the touch controls on the bud's stalks. Actions like adjusting the volume result in a long pause before the changes take effect - over two seconds in our testing.
There are three listening modes - ANC; ambient, which amplifies external sounds; and standard mode, which relies on passive noise cancelation. The ANC works well, but don't expect miracles - airplanes sailed silently across the sky, but the builder's drill down the street still made it through.
The bud's strongest point is their fit. They come with three pairs of tips, which are easy to change, and using the touch controls never hurt our ears. We could easily use these buds all day. But there are better alternatives for a similar price.
