Plugable Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Hub

Plugable Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Hub

A compact dock for your laptop

There are plenty of docks and hubs available for the Mac these days, but Plugable says that its new Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Hub is the first to offer "pure USB-C design". That simply means that the Hub focuses exclusively on providing support for Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 via its three USB-C connectors. The Hub is still compatible with older Macs that have Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C (aka USB 3.2), but there are no USB-A ports, or the audio or Ethernet interfaces that you can find on some docks.

Having just three ports means that the dock is admirably compact, measuring just 120mm wide, 73mm deep, and 18mm high. You can easily sit it on a desk alongside a MacBook, or slide it under the screen of an iMac. It's not portable, though, as it does require a rather chunky external power supply in order to drive all the devices.

There's a single USB-C port on the front for connecting your Mac, and this port also provides 60W power for charging a laptop as well. The three USB-C ports for your accessories are tucked away on the back, and these can also provide 15W charging for smaller devices such as smartphones and tablets. The Hub can drive two external displays with 4K resolution at 60Hz, or a single 8K display at 30Hz, and Plugable includes a handy HDMI adaptor for displays that don't have their own USB-C port. But, as mentioned, the Hub doesn't include any other types of ports or connectors, and it'd be nice to have at least one USB-A port for laptop models that don't have USB-C at all.
