Most people who conference call will be aware of the limitations of a laptop mic and speakers, not least when it comes to ambient noise interfering with your calls. Anker’s PowerConf 700 headset aims to solve these problems and offer extra features for the busy video conferencer.

The headset is very lightweight at just 185g and uses quite small on–ear pads. They grip the head solidly but without excess pressure. The boom mic can be rotated to be worn on the left or right side of the head, and raising the mic or pulling its cup away from the head will mute it.

It connects to your Mac or iOS device over Bluetooth but for the full feature set you’ll need to attach the included USB dongle, which has USB–C and USB–A compatibility. The AnkerWork desktop app lets you manage EQ and other settings including the three listening modes — active noise canceling, transparency, or ANC off.

Canceling can be switched on one of the cups and there’s also a volume dial and VoiceShield that detects and eliminates background noise. This seems to work as advertised and overall call and listening quality is good. Two devices can connect at once and there’s 21 hours of battery with ANC on, and 24 hours talk time of battery with.

The app enables call transcription with 1000 minutes included and add–ons from $1.99 for 60 minutes up to $9.99 for 1000 minutes. This service works well, with recordings sent to servers and text files returned in a very short time. It’s an added cost but it’s ultimately optional and far quicker than manually transcribing.
