Roku’s latest device really sticks it to Apple TV

Roku’s range of streaming players can be a little confusing, with several models that seem to offer very similar designs and features. However, its new Streaming Stick 4K is great value at just $39.99, and can certainly give the Apple TV box a real run for its money.

The compact little device looks just like a USB memory stick, with an HDMI port on one end that allows you to plug it directly into a TV or monitor. There’s also a micro–USB port that provides power to the stick — either from the included mains adaptor, or a USB port on your TV. Getting started is a piece of cake, as the stick automatically detects Roku’s remote control, and then displays instructions on the TV screen to help you connect it to your Wi–Fi network and set up apps and TV channels. You can also pair the Roku remote with your TV, or use the Roku Remote app to control the stick from your iOS devices.

The Streaming Stick 4K provides apps for Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon, and many other streaming services, so that you can use your existing online accounts to watch films and TV. And, as well as 4K resolution, this new model also supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for the latest TV sets. Even better is the fact that it also supports AirPlay, allowing you to stream music and video from your Macs and iOS devices straight to your TV.
