A waterproof speaker to take anywhere

JBL’s Flip 6 is designed to be taken anywhere including to the beach or the pool, with an IP67 water and dust–proof rating that means it can be immersed in water up to 3 feet with no ill effects. It charges over USB–C and a cable is provided in the box, plus there's a warning that sounds if you try to charge it when there's water in the charging port. Charging is relatively slow 2.5 hours to full, but this does provide a solid 12 hours of playback and there’s a backlit meter on the body to show you its current charge level.

Build quality is excellent, weighing just 1.2 pounds, and it feels sturdy with a carrying handle attached for convenience. It also comes in a choice of four colors and features "PartyBoost" mode, activated via a button, which lets you pair two compatible speakers for stereo, or more than two to achieve multiple mono playback. Internally, there's an oval shaped driver and separate tweeter, with 20W and 10W power respectively. At either end, passive bass radiators are used to kick out the lower frequencies to great effect and create a punchy and rich bass that’s much more solid than you might expect from such a compact unit.

As we have come to expect from modern Bluetooth speakers, the sound is impressive, offering good clarity and soundstage with a range of different types of music, though it's at its best when playing something with a bit of kick to it. It's capable of going surprisingly loud, even if clarity and focus start to wane at the very highest volumes. A companion app for iOS and Android provides simple controls including firmware updates and a basic EQ. JBL makes cheaper speakers with a bit less grunt and larger, costlier ones with more features like integrated power banks, but the Flip 6 is an excellent balance of audio fidelity, ruggedness, and portability.
