Design and Build
BenQ copied the MacBook playbook for the looks: silver finish, nearly bezel-less front (the bezels measure under a millimeter), and a minimalist stand. The stand is a three-part clip-together design that tightens with a single thumbscrew, and it comes fully assembled out of the box. A rubberized pad on the front lip of the base is a thoughtful touch — it's where you rest a MacBook or phone without scratching anything, and it gives the base a bit of grip.
Two design realities are worth knowing before you buy. First, the chassis is plastic, not aluminum. It's well-made plastic with a clean silver paint job, and from two feet away you can't tell the difference — but pick it up and it's obvious. The Studio Display is machined aluminum. Second, this thing is heavy: 19.05 pounds with the stand, which makes it nearly five pounds heavier than the Studio Display. The result is text sharpness that matches a MacBook's built-in display. If you've been living with a 27-inch 1440p panel (109 PPI) or a 4K panel running in a scaled mode, the difference is visible within the first minute. This is the monitor's entire reason to exist, and it delivers.
The Nano Gloss coating is BenQ's take on Apple's glossy finish — a glossy surface with a subtle anti-reflective treatment that diffuses harsh light instead of reflecting it cleanly. Colors look saturated and rich, blacks look deeper than a typical matte IPS, and contrast holds up from off-axis angles better than I expected. The trade-off is that it's still glossy. In a bright room with a window behind you, you'll see ghost reflections, and dark content turns the whole panel into a mirror. My desk has a window to the left and I noticed it regularly; if you work in a sun-drenched room, consider the matte MA270U instead.
Brightness is where the MA270S doesn't quite hit its own spec. BenQ claims 450 nits typical; my SDR measurements peaked at 387 nits. That's still plenty for indoor use — it's the brightest third-party Mac monitor I've tested — but it's noticeably dimmer than the Studio Display, which hit 518 nits in my testing. In a bright office, the Apple panel has the edge.
Contrast is the pleasant surprise. BenQ rates it at 2000:1 static, roughly double what typical IPS panels manage, and it shows: blacks look properly deep for an IPS, and shadow detail in dark photos and video holds up. Apple doesn't publish a contrast figure for the Studio Display, but independent measurements put it around 1200:1, so the MA270S actually wins this one.
Color accuracy is the other headline. BenQ claims 99% sRGB and 99% DCI-P3 coverage; my measurements came in at 158.7% of sRGB and 112.4% of DCI-P3, with an average delta-E of 0.09 — the most accurate display I've measured in this class, better than the Studio Display's 0.2 in my testing. The 35W and 15W USB-C ports keep an iPad or iPhone topped off, and they keep charging even when the monitor is off (BenQ calls it power-off charging). Daisy-chaining a second 5K display works on Pro, Max, and Ultra-class Apple silicon; note that base M1 and M2 MacBooks can't drive two external displays at all, so the feature is dead on those machines.
Two small gripes. Connect via HDMI and your MacBook won't charge — power only flows over USB-C or Thunderbolt. The Studio Display remains the only choice if you need the webcam, the speakers, or the aluminum. The ASUS PA27JCV is the cheaper matte alternative for color-critical work, but its 1500:1 contrast, weaker measured brightness, and lack of glossy option put it a step behind in image quality.
