Most USB-C hubs make you pick a lane. The cheap ones give you Gigabit Ethernet and one 4K/60Hz HDMI port and call it a day. The small ones trade ports for a body that fits in a pocket. Spend up, and you get a power brick the size of a paperback.

The Plugable USB-C Hub 10-in-1 (USBC-10IN1E) tries to refuse that trade. For $74.95, it puts 2.5-gigabit Ethernet, an HDMI 2.1 port that can drive 4K at 144Hz, five USB data ports, and both SD and microSD slots on a single 8.5-inch aluminum stick — and it feeds up to 125W of charging back to your laptop through the same cable. Plugable launched it in April 2026 as the pro version of its well-liked 9-in-1, and the pitch is simple: docking-station ports without the docking station.

I've had one as my daily connection for a MacBook Air and a two-port Windows tablet, with a 4K monitor, wired network, external SSD, and keyboard and mouse hanging off it. For the money, it's a genuinely impressive piece of kit. It's also not the automatic buy its spec sheet suggests, and there's one number in particular you need to understand before you spend $75.

Design and Build

At 8.5 inches long, 1.3 inches wide and 0.6 inches thick, the USBC-10IN1E looks less like a hub and more like a slim chocolate bar. The space-gray aluminum shell feels dense and cool in the hand, and at 3.8 ounces it disappears into a laptop bag. There's no power supply to lose, either. The hub is bus-powered and runs entirely off the host, which is the main reason it stays this small.

The cable deserves a hard look before you buy. It's a 0.56-foot (17cm) USB-C pigtail that's permanently attached. Fixed cables have a clear upside: nothing to lose, nothing to forget at home.

The downside is that if the cable frays or the connector dies, the whole hub is done. Length is the bigger issue. Six inches works when the hub sits beside your laptop on a desk.

It's awkward if your laptop lives on a stand with the ports facing away from you, and it won't reach a tower PC under a desk at all. Plugable expects this to live right next to the machine, and you should too.

Ports line up along the front face, spread across the full 8.5 inches. That's a better layout than the dense clusters you get on pocket hubs. I plugged in two chunky USB-A connectors side by side plus a memory card and never had to fight for room.

Two 10Gbps USB-C ports sit in the mix, and they're data-only — video comes out of the HDMI port and nowhere else. There's no 3.5mm audio jack and no DisplayPort, so if you need either of those, this isn't your hub.

Heat deserves a mention, because this thing does real work. Under a sustained 2.5-gigabit network transfer with an SSD running, the body gets noticeably warm along its length. Not alarmingly hot — I could hold it comfortably — and it never throttled or dropped a device while I tested it.

But it's a passive aluminum slab moving its own 15W overhead plus whatever your peripherals draw, so warmth is part of the deal. In a cool office it barely rises above room temperature. In a warm room under heavy load, it's a hand-warmer.

Performance

Bandwidth: the number that decides everything

Here's the catch that determines whether this hub fits your setup. The entire upstream link runs at USB 3.2 Gen 2 — 10Gbps — and that pipe is shared. The five USB data ports, both card readers, and the power pass-through all draw from the same pool.

One fast SSD plugged in alone will hit close to full speed. Plug in three and they'll divide what's there.

Two things sit outside that pool, and it's the right design. HDMI runs on its own DisplayPort Alt Mode channel, so your monitor keeps its full signal no matter how hard the USB side is working. Ethernet has its own controller channel too. The ports you use constantly — display and network — don't compete with your drives.

Real-world data speeds

My transfer results tracked that 10Gbps ceiling closely. With a Crucial X10 external SSD on one of the 10Gbps ports, I measured reads around 868MB/s and writes around 792MB/s — essentially the drive's own limit, not the hub's. Adding a second, slower card reader and pulling from both at once barely moved the needle: the X10 dropped to roughly 782MB/s read and 771MB/s write. This is a well-behaved hub.

The SD and microSD slots are the weak spot. They're UHS-I, rated at 104MB/s, and real cards land under that.

My Lexar 1800x read at about 88MB/s and wrote at 76MB/s; with a second device running, writes fell to about 60MB/s. For casual photo offloads, that's fine. If you're a photographer dumping a full card of RAWs every day, it's slow — and Plugable's cheaper 9-in-1 actually has faster UHS-II readers. That one stings a bit at this price.

Ethernet and power

The 2.5-gigabit port is the headline for anyone with a fast NAS or a multi-gig switch. In my testing it pushed about 150MB/s (roughly 1.2Gbps) across a real network path, around 2.5x what Gigabit Ethernet manages. It also ran warmer than any other single port on the hub. Most people don't have a 2.5GbE network to take advantage of it, but if you do, this is one of the cheapest ways to get there in a hub.

Bus power cuts both ways. The hub supplies 7.5W on its three fastest ports and 4.5W on the two 5Gbps USB-A ports — enough to trickle-charge a phone or run bus-powered peripherals, not enough to fast-charge much.

Some high-draw portable SSDs simply won't spin up through it. I couldn't get a LaCie Rugged Pro5 or a Seagate Five Vault to mount on the hub even with the power supply connected; both needed a direct connection to the laptop. Plugable reserves about 15W internally to keep things stable, and that reserve is exactly what limits the port power budget.

Display output

The HDMI port is more capable than most hubs', but only on the right host. I ran a 4K monitor at 60Hz without a flicker or a dropout — that was the monitor's ceiling, so I couldn't verify 144Hz myself.

Plugable is honest about the conditions: 8K at 30Hz or 4K at 144Hz needs a Windows machine with DisplayPort 1.4 and DSC (12th-gen Intel or newer, or RTX 30/40 graphics), or a Mac with an M1/M2 Pro or Max, or an M3-or-later chip on macOS 26 or newer. Older DP 1.2 systems top out at 4K at 30Hz, and base M1/M2 Macs and the MacBook Neo cap at 4K at 60Hz. Buy this for 144Hz and plug it into a five-year-old laptop and you'll be disappointed.

Compatibility and Real-World Use

Setup is genuinely plug-and-play. There are no drivers to install on Windows 10/11, macOS 11+, or ChromeOS, and the Realtek Ethernet chipset is recognized automatically (Windows fetches its driver through Windows Update if needed). The hub also works with USB-C iPads and iPhone 15 and later. I moved it between a MacBook Air and a Windows tablet and got identical behavior on both — display, Ethernet, storage, and charging all came up on the first try.

Charging is where this hub separates itself. It accepts up to 140W from a PD 3.1 EPR charger and passes up to 125W to the host, because it keeps about 15W for itself. A 16-inch MacBook Pro technically wants 140W for maximum fast-charging speed, so 125W falls just short of the ceiling — but it's still more than the 100W most hubs advertise, and it's enough to keep a big MacBook Pro topped up under load. When I connected a 65W charger instead, the hub passed through what the laptop could take and charged normally.

I couldn't read individual complaints behind the retailer's login wall, so I won't pretend to know each reason. But the likely culprits are all visible in the specs: buyers expecting full speed from every port at once, buyers plugging it into older laptops and getting 4K/30Hz instead of 144Hz, and buyers who need more power at the ports than a bus-powered hub can give.

None of that is a defect. It's a sign that this hub rewards a buyer who reads the fine print.
