UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Review: A 6-Bay AI NAS That's Really a Mini Server

The typical 6-bay NAS ships with an old quad-core Celeron, 8GB of RAM, and a pair of 1GbE ports, and sells for $600. The UGREEN NASync iDX6011 is not that machine. It packs a 14-core Intel Core Ultra 5 processor with an NPU, 32 or 64GB of soldered LPDDR5X, dual 10GbE, dual Thunderbolt 4, an 8K HDMI output, and a PCIe Gen4 x8 expansion slot into a chassis that weighs about as much as a desktop PC. UGREEN calls it an "AI NAS," and it does run local language models, but strip the AI marketing away and what you're really looking at is the cheapest way to put a workstation-class server on your home network.

That's the honest framing, because the price demands it. The iDX6011 starts at $1,699 for the 32GB version and $1,999 for the 64GB version, diskless, as of mid 2026. The Pro model adds a Core Ultra 7 and a touchscreen for $2,599. I spent several weeks with the 64GB non-Pro as my main unit and also had hands-on time with the Pro. The whole review comes down to one tension: the hardware is the best value in the NAS market right now, and the software is the youngest, least-proven stack of any major vendor. Which of those two facts matters more depends entirely on what you plan to do with it.

Hardware: workstation parts in a NAS-shaped box

The iDX6011 is physically imposing. It measures roughly 13.8 × 8 × 10 inches and weighs about 26 pounds diskless — closer to an ITX PC tower than anything you'd call a "desktop NAS." The full aluminum chassis has a matte finish, six lockable tool-free drive trays up front, and removable side panels held on with hex screws (a hex key ships in the box). On my unit the panel fit was tight enough that getting them back on took some persuasion — a small gripe, but you'll be in there every time you touch the M.2 slots. Inside is an internal power supply, so there's no brick to hide, and the rear fan sits behind a magnetic dust filter that pops off for cleaning.

The storage layout is three-tiered. Six SATA III bays handle bulk capacity — UGREEN quotes a 196TB maximum (6× 32TB drives plus two NVMe SSDs) and says it has verified 30TB drives. Two M.2 NVMe slots live under the right side panel, where they can be configured either as cache or as standalone SSD volumes. And a dedicated 128GB internal SSD runs the operating system, so the OS never eats into your data pool. M.2 heatsinks come in the box.

Here's the thing that separates this from every rival: there is no other NAS at $1,699 with dual 10GbE, dual Thunderbolt 4, a PCIe x8 slot, and 32GB of RAM. The Core Ultra 5 125H is a real laptop-class chip — 14 cores, an Arc iGPU with hardware AV1/H.265 encoding and decoding, and an NPU rated at 34 TOPS. The Pro's Ultra 7 roughly doubles the NPU figure to 96 TOPS and adds the OCuLink port for attaching an external GPU. The non-Pro's only notable omissions are the touchscreen and OCuLink; everything else carries over.

The one hardware decision I'd push back on is the soldered RAM. 32GB or 64GB is generous today — far beyond the 8GB most NAS boxes ship with — but it's also the ceiling forever. NAS owners are used to extending a machine's life by popping in more memory four years down the road, and you can't do that here. Buy the 64GB version if you plan to run VMs, heavy Docker stacks, or the AI features, because the 32GB unit will feel tighter sooner.

Performance: built for 10GbE, and it shows

Let's get the headline numbers out with their test conditions, because NAS throughput claims without conditions are worthless. I tested the storage and network stack with six NAS-class HDDs in RAID 5 with SSD read/write caching enabled, connected over dual 10GbE to a client machine, with jumbo frames (MTU 9000) where applicable. The M.2 slots were populated with a pair of PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives.

  • RAID 5, six HDDs + SSD cache: ~950 MB/s read, ~670 MB/s write. That's genuinely 10GbE-class sustained throughput — the kind of number a 1GbE box can't approach and most 2.5GbE boxes can't either.
  • M.2 NVMe volumes: ~5.5–6.0 GB/s internal read and write, consistent whether measured through the built-in benchmark or via SSH. These slots aren't a token cache feature; they're real high-speed storage.
  • Dual 10GbE SMB multichannel: reads scaled beautifully to ~2,200–2,300 MB/s across both links, but writes stalled around 1,300–1,500 MB/s — behaving like a single 10GbE stream with occasional dips. The second link wasn't fully utilized on upstream traffic in my testing, and I tried multiple configurations before concluding it's a software tuning issue in UGOS Pro's SMB stack rather than the hardware.
  • Single 10GbE link: effectively saturated with an NVMe volume, and RAID 5 HDD reads came close. A 10GbE switch or direct PC connection will be fully fed.

One thing to plan around: the initial RAID build on large platters is slow. UGOS's own time estimate for my six-drive array ran into days, so I let it grind over a weekend before trusting it. Don't start this box on a Tuesday morning expecting to use it by lunch.

The transcoding story is where the non-Pro and Pro part ways. The Core Ultra 5's Arc iGPU handles hardware-accelerated 4K H.265 transcoding in Plex without breaking a sweat — one or two simultaneous transcodes for a family setup is trivial. The Pro's bigger GPU is a different league: with the loaner Pro I pushed ten concurrent 4K60 HDR streams to Apple TVs on a 10GbE network, eight of them transcoded, without dropping a frame. Don't buy the non-Pro expecting that; buy it expecting comfortable household media serving.

Power and noise are the honest costs of this much hardware. With six drives spinning, two NVMe SSDs, and both 10GbE links active, I measured 67–68W at idle and 93–100W+ under active file access; throw an AI model query into the mix and it can pass 100W. UGREEN's marketing claims 29–34 dB, which I could not reproduce: I measured 39–40 dBA with fans on low at idle, 40–43 dBA on auto, and up to 50–51 dBA with fans maxed during active drive access. The metal chassis also transmits drive vibration more than plastic boxes do. It's not loud like a server rack, but it's not quiet like a Synology, and a big platter array makes it audible from across a room.

Thermally the unit behaved well. After 36 hours of sustained activity, surface temperatures ranged from about 35°C at the top to 44–45°C at the rear vents — warm, not hot, with no thermal warnings and no throttling. That's a meaningful improvement over UGREEN's own DXP6800 Pro, which throttled under load in my testing. One caveat: the M.2 area has no direct airflow, and those drives run warm; add your own heatsinks if you plan heavy NVMe use.

Software: UGOS Pro is the young half of this product

A NAS is software-first, and UGOS Pro is the reason this review isn't a simple recommendation. The good news: it's a real, complete operating system, not a toy. It's Linux-based with a desktop-style web UI, a guided setup wizard, and the full expected toolkit — Storage Center for pools and volumes, user permissions, LDAP/Domain support, iSCSI, a package manager, and regular firmware updates (the version at my review time, 1.13.x, was already several releases past launch). Btrfs is supported alongside ext4, which brings snapshots and checksummed data integrity. Docker runs properly on this x86 chip, and there's a built-in Virtual Machine app that ran Ubuntu and Windows 11 without drama. Backup options cover scheduled sync, external drives, cloud targets, and Time Machine (though Time Machine setup is fiddlier than on a Synology). Remote access works via UGREEN's UgreenLink tunnel or your own DDNS. On features alone, this is 90% of a Synology — the missing 10% is polish, depth, and years of iteration.

The gaps are real, though. There's no flexible RAID — no Synology SHR equivalent — so mixed-capacity drives in an array are limited to the smallest disk, and growing a volume means rebuilding. There's no ZFS, which power users will notice. The App Center is thinner than DSM or QTS: Plex isn't there (you install it via Docker — it works, with hardware transcoding, but that's a manual step most buyers won't expect), and the surveillance apps are shallow. And there's no supported way to move a volume from another NAS into this one, or from this one to a future UGREEN — migrating between servers means a full copy. These are exactly the kind of software limitations that matter more in year three than year one.

The AI layer: interesting, not finished

The AI is the differentiator UGREEN is selling, so it deserves honest scrutiny. It breaks into two pieces: an AI-powered Photos app and a local chatbot called Uliya, both running on-device through a Qwen-based model stack you download from the AI Console. The photo side is genuinely good — semantic search ("show me the kids in red from the Spain trip"), OCR on receipts and documents, duplicate detection, and custom-trained object recognition. It's the closest thing I've seen to the polish of Immich or Google Photos in a turnkey NAS, and it all runs locally.

The chatbot is where the beta shows. On the 64GB non-Pro I measured 8.2 tokens/sec from the general Qwen3 model (which holds ~12GB of the RAM), 16.5 tokens/sec from the lightweight vision model, and real-time speech-to-text transcription — a 2.5-hour podcast transcribed in about 10 minutes. Those are respectable numbers for a NAS. But the model hallucinates — it answered confident nonsense on several document questions in my testing, and other testers have hit the same wall. It has no reliable sense of time, loses conversation context easily, can't run queries in the background (one request at a time, and it blocks the chat), and forgets everything between sessions. The cloud-model integration is buggy, with authentication errors even when the UI says you're connected. And there's no generative capability — no image or video creation, despite the "AI NAS" branding.

The privacy claim checks out, which is the strongest thing I can say for it: I watched the network traffic during model downloads, indexing, and queries, and nothing left the box. That's the real reason to consider this machine over just using ChatGPT. Just know you're buying into a feature that's still being actively developed — UGREEN ships updates to it regularly, and the direction is right, but the first several months of ownership will feel like a beta program.

Compatibility

Clients are not a problem. Windows, macOS, and Linux all map SMB shares without drama, and the dual Thunderbolt 4 ports make this a credible direct-attached workstation device for editors who want to pull 10GbE-class speed off a laptop without buying network gear. The front SD 4.0 card slot is positioned for photographers dumping cards daily. Phones and tablets get UGREEN's companion app for files, photos, and media. Plex runs via Docker with hardware transcoding, Home Assistant and other containers are easy, and the HDMI port means the box can drive a display directly if you want a living-room media endpoint. The ecosystem is young but open — the x86 CPU plus Docker means most of the self-hosted world is available to you.

Who this is for (and who should skip it)

Buy the iDX6011 if: you already have 10GbE (or Thunderbolt and a reason to use it) and you want a NAS that won't be the bottleneck; you run Docker containers, VMs, or heavy media libraries; you're a photographer or video editor with a big archive and a need for fast ingest; or you want local AI without sending your data to a cloud. It's also the right buy if you're the type who upgrades the network before the storage.

Skip it if: your network is 1GbE — you will extract maybe a tenth of what this hardware can do, and a $600 four-bay box is the rational purchase; you want mature, battle-tested NAS software (buy Synology, accept weaker hardware for the same money); you need flexible RAID or ZFS; or you're allergic to the idea of running a product whose software is still visibly evolving.

And the honest "do you even need this?" answer: if your goal is a second copy of your photo folder, a $60 external drive is the correct purchase. If you want always-on central storage, backups, and media serving, a NAS is a commitment — it runs 24/7, wants patching, and needs its own backups. This particular NAS is a commitment with a $1,700+ entry fee and $600+ worth of drives on top. It earns that only if you'll actually use the speed and the compute.

The in-house question is the DXP6800 Pro, UGREEN's own previous-generation 6-bay. It has the same bays, Thunderbolt, and most of the same software, with upgradeable RAM slots — and it costs $900 less. The iDX6011's premiums are the second 10GbE port, the PCIe x8 slot, the massively faster CPU, and the AI stack. If you don't need any of those, the 6800 Pro is the sensible buy and I'd tell you so in person. Against QNAP and Synology, the calculus is inverted: the iDX6011 embarrasses both on hardware at similar or better prices, and both embarrass UGREEN on software maturity. Choose your priority.

The UGREEN NASync iDX6011 is the best hardware-per-dollar NAS on the market in 2026, and simultaneously a bet on software that isn't finished. If you have 10GbE — or Thunderbolt and a good reason — and you'll actually run containers, VMs, or a serious media library on it, the 64GB version at $1,999 is genuinely cheap for the hardware inside; nothing from Synology or QNAP touches it at that price. If you're coming from DSM or QTS, the missing polish, flexible RAID, and migration path will frustrate you inside the first month.

My honest recommendation: buy it if the hardware speaks to you and you're comfortable with early-adopter software — the updates are coming regularly and the foundation is solid. Buy the DXP6800 Pro instead if you want UGREEN's chassis at half the price with upgradeable RAM. Buy a Synology if software maturity is your non-negotiable. And if you don't know why you'd need dual 10GbE, you don't need this NAS — save the $2,000-plus-drives and buy something that fits your network. At full price the AI is a bonus you're paying for whether you want it or not; treat it as exactly that, and the iDX6011 is easier to love.
